Who We Are

The 2008 Vision Sisters Trust was set up in order to promote awareness and obtain funds for women and youth in crisis in Kibera, Kenya.

The Vision Sisters, Kibera Branch, is an interfaith women’s group dedicated to making a difference amid overwhelming challenges in Kibera, Kenya. Kibera is one of Africa's largest slums and is home to over 700,000 residents. Within this vast "informal settlement"exist some of the most squalid living conditions on earth. Residents are faced daily with no land tenure, lack of durable housing, lack of water and sanitation, overcrowding, sexual and gender based violence, racial discrimination and extreme poverty. Women and children are particularly vulnerable in this environment.

The Vision Sisters Crisis Centre, Kibera Branch, is a new project which will act as a shelter for abused women and children, a recreation centre for youth and a voluntary counseling and testing centre for the estimated 15% of people living in Kibera with HIV/AIDS. Kenya is a place of hope; volunteering with the Vision Sisters in 2006 illustrated this most powerfully to me.

Why I Am Involved

Volunteering with The Sisters and seeing their hardship presented me with a choice; to be discouraged by this reality and return home well-informed but indifferent, or to use this reality as a motivating force to find constructive ways that I, as an individual, can positively affect the lives of the women who so greatly affected mine. I believe in the power of grass roots initiatives- these women understand their community and what will help.

The Fundraising Event

A very successful fundraising event was held on Feb 25. 2008 at Opus Bar, Opus Hotel in Yaletown, Vancouver, BC. The event was a photo exhibit and silent auction. Over 180 people came out to support the cause and the 2008 Vision Sisters Trust raised over $25,000. 100% of the donations go directly to Kibera, Kenya. Thank you to all of the generous donors!
